  • General Care & Maintenance of Polymer Clay

Polymer clay is a very versatile material and can essentially last for years, if not decades, if the proper care is taken. To maximize the lifespan of your polymer clay product please read the following:

    1. Polymer clay is water resistant. Temporary exposure to water will not damage polymer clay or affect the quality of any patterns or designs within the clay itself (i.e. millefiori). If your product falls in water or becomes wet/moist take a dry paper towel and very gently pat the piece until it is dry before storing it.

    2. Polymer clay is heat resistant up to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. It is not flame resistant. Direct flame will blacken the clay and/or create bubbles, so avoid letting polymer clay come into direct contact with open flames or heated elements (i.e. stove, oven, BBQ elements, etc.)

    3. If possible, avoid prolonged exposure to freezing temperatures. If you have purchased a piece that you wish to keep outside please make sure to bring it inside before first frost and store it somewhere safe until outdoor temperatures return to steadily above freezing. Polymer clay becomes very brittle and can crack and break easily when exposed to freezing temperatures.

    4. Polymer clay can be quite rigid depending on the thickness of the clay surface. For surfaces that are less than 1/4" in thickness take care to avoid situations that might force the clay to bend as there is a good possibility that the pressure could cause the cured clay to break/snap. If this occurs and you wish to repair the piece both superglue and epoxy are safe to use, though make sure to follow product guidelines to ensure you handle the glues safely.
